Renovation Realities

Written by drew on January 14th, 2010

Since Jamie and I bought the house, things have been topsy-turvy. We had most of our belongings in the garage while we waited for Home Depot to install our carpet. The tv was in the bedroom while we were installing the Pergo in the living room. I’ve never been a fan of tv in the bedroom, so I’ve never had one. It was kind of like being in a hotel with the thing staring at us. A couple nights we watched it, and found a program we liked on DIY network called Renovation Realities, where people decided to do their own remodeling and the camera crew just documents what happens. Things are so bad that there are several warning graphics advising viewers to not use the circular saw while standing on a ladder, for example. It is pretty funny watching people who know less than you screw things up, but also pretty sad. Watching married couples throw sarcasm around at each other when things explode has been difficult to see. I’ve gotten frustrated while installing stuff many times. I’m just glad Jamie isn’t standing off to the side saying stuff like, “Okay Mr. Smarty Pants, what are you going to do now?”

Well, we did have one small adventure… Brian and I were replacing the over-the-stove microwave with a newer model that was donated to us by a benevolent friend who wanted stainless steel appliances. We had to replace the wall bracket that holds it up, because microwave manufacturers haven’t standardized on them. We find the wall studs and get the new unit in place. The old one had cracked plastic on the handle and no turntable, but the replacement was in great shape. We plug it in and I go to turn on the fan to make sure our connection to the exhaust vent was secure when a loud POP and smoke come from they keypad. After I reset the breaker the microwave won’t respond to anything I press. I found the replacement part online for $140. So, this thing better work great when I get it installed! Our friend also gave us a matching solid surface stove, so we aren’t complaining too much. Besides, the stove works great! We’ve used it a lot in the last week since we’ve been without a microwave…

3rd annual trip to St. Mark’s

Written by jamie on January 2nd, 2010

Last Thursday Drew and I took a break from home repair and took our annual trip to St. Mark’s lighthouse, the site of Drew’s sweet proposal.

St. Mark's Lighthouse

We stopped at the gift shop and Drew bought a $5 kite. We got to the lighthouse and Drew sat on the steps and assembled it.

Assembling of the monarch

It was a windy day, so it didn’t take long for our plastic monarch to take flight.

Flight of the monarch

The butterfly flew pretty high.

Flying high

And then, it crashed.

Oops

Into gator “infested” waters.

Gator waters

While fishing out the kite, a real monarch butterfly fluttered by.

Momma!

We fished the kite out and dried it out a bit.

A bit soggy

Maybe this time would be better.

One more try

It got pretty high.

High over the waters

Drew passed the string off to me and let me fly it for a bit.

My turn

I flew it for a minute, then passed it back before it took another nose dive.

Trying hard not to let go

Not long after I passed it back, it decided to revisit the water.

Another swim

We dried it off again.

Wet monarch

We gave it a rest for awhile, and took a walk and enjoyed the scenery.

Beautiful

We came back to give it one more go.

One last flight

It flew REALLY high this time.

Way high

I got another go at it too.

Don't let go!

Then came the task of reeling the thing back in.

It took awhile to reel it back

With 200 feet of twine, it took some time to get it down.

Getting there...

Finally, we got it down without crashing it!

A successful flight!

What a fun day. I love you, baby.

Smooch!

As promised…

At least the neighbors can't peep

Ghetto window treatment

Drew was quite clever, making use of whatever materials he could find.

Looks much better with new blinds

Looks much better with new blinds

We decided we liked this look better.

Our new home

So it’ s been too long since the last post. Drew and I have been drowning in closing costs, paperwork, and home improvement projects. We closed on the house on December 4th, and have been frantically working to get the place livable. After ripping out some nasty smelling carpet and a few late night painting parties, we’re almost there. Well, we’re living in it still, even though it’s not quite livable. We’ve got the master bedroom all done, and we’re sleeping there with our ghetto mismatched furniture. The rest of our furniture is in the living room, in some random haphazard configuration, on top of the concrete sub-flooring. Nothing says home sweet home like cold concrete on the feet.

We did pick up the Pergo laminate for the living room today, and after a few days of warming up, we’ll install it. I spent most of today unpacking the kitchen that we transported over yesterday. I’m trying to be optimistic, as all the plates, cups, and silverware are put away. It just doesn’t look like I’ve made much progress, as there’s random pieces still strewn everywhere. We’re still not out of the duplex yet either, and the amount of stuff left to be packed up there is quite overwhelming.

So, with about as much fun for one day as I could handle, I packed up my laptop and headed to Redeye for a cup of tea and some internet. Drew’s at guy night tonight, and I hope he’s wrangling together some help for installing the laminate flooring.

I do have lots of pics, most of which are on our photo website. A few are still on my camera, including the ghetto window covering that Drew concocted for the living room window so that neighbors won’t peep at me in my robe while I’m enjoying my morning cup of coffee. I’ll post those soon, as I’ve been told that these are the moments that the best memories are made of.  In the meantime, here are a few of the transition pics. Enjoy.
