Yeah, I’m still alive

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

So the kocur.net blog looks like it has been taken over by the newest member of the Kocur clan. It’s been a weird few months and it seems like I just haven’t made time to sit down and write anything meaningful. I think a side effect of being married has been that when I have things come up in my life that normally I would have blogged about, now I talk to Jamie about before bedtime and then that’s the end of it. So, I haven’t needed the therapeutic aspects of this as much. Poor Jamie, though, hahahahh. I guess she’s needed it quite a bit!

Today we made some time to go to a coffee shop and chill for a bit. I brought the laptop and balanced my checkbook and paid bills. Jamie is enjoying some sort of designer coffee and writing like mad in her journal. Since I have some time, I might as well write something.

Lately things have been in a bit of flux. The state budget process has been nerve-racking, to say the least. It looks like most of my department will still have jobs on July 1st, but it is going to look very different around there. Some other departments will be closed or merged. Part-time employees may be right-sized downsized laid-off fired. Luckily university employees are exempt from the 2% tax pay cut. But things for our family are doing well. Jamie got a better job in January and has been picking up more music students. My side work was slow for a month or so but has picked up and we are starting to pay down debt. We both want to buy a house but our first focus is becoming debt-free. Unfortunately deciding to be debt-free doesn’t make it so. It will take some time, but we’ll be there eventually. We’re both thankful to have jobs in this economy and a roof over our heads, even if that roof belongs to our landlord.

Later I need to write a bit about our church visits. Jamie has written some about them already, but as we’ve taken this time to rest, I’ve had some thoughts about what we’ve been learning. Stay tuned.

Jamie’s Second Annual 29th Birthday

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Today is Jamie’s birthday. It’s a big one, too. But we’re not talking about that, and as much as I want to make old jokes about her, I’m still older. So, she get’s a pass. I’m thankful she’s in my life and I’m glad she’s younger. She’ll be able to take care of me when I’m old and need my diaper changed. I was going to write about all the things I want to do today, but she has internet access at work, so maybe I’ll write about it tomorrow.

I love you, my sweet. Happy Birthday.

I may hate Windows, but Bill Gates is my new hero

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

This is short, but I had to share. I’ve been an Apple Computer user since 1985, and have never liked Windows, or that Bill Gates stole a bunch of cool features from the Mac, just like Apple ‘borrowed’ them from Xerox. But at a technology conference, Bill Gates just elevated his status in my eyes quite a bit.

Bill Gates Unleashes Swarm of Mosquitoes on Crowd (opens in new window)

Wow. I guess what got my attention is that it’s the sort of thing I would probably do, if I had a few billion dollars and nothing to lose. Heck, I’d probably do it anyway, even being broke. I love his quote, “There is no reason only poor people should be infected.” Good job, Bill.

Ugh

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

Well, believe it or not, I still exist. It has been almost forever since I’ve written a post on here. I am alive and have tons that I need to write, but I’m not sure how much of that writing will end up on the public page. I’m processing a lot right now and haven’t made the time I need to sort through it. Typically how my ADD life goes is that all these tasks stack up, and the whole pile it too overwhelming to deal with, so I either throw it all away or just leave it and pretend it isn’t there. So, the books say break the task into bite-sized pieces and then do one at a time.

Here are the things I need to write about. Maybe I’ll cross them off as I complete them.

Nicaragua stories

Church politics

Christmas

Layoffs

The Palm Pre (can’t get here too soon)

Step 10.

Okay, that’ll keep me busy through summer. Jamie and I are trying to set aside time each Sunday to go to a park and be creative, so I hope to write some and work on jokes for a future comedy show. Getting into the other side of my brain is fun and a way to relax. In an odd way, so is cleaning while listening to music. It works out the spatial relations and movement parts of my brain that just sit dormant when I’m working on a computer and trying to figure out why Windoze sucks so bad. Anyways, thanks for reading this ramble and I’ll try to post something better later.
